Reasons to be cheerful, 123

Are you looking to start something new in the coming year and decade? There are many reasons to try Yoga. Whatever your resolve or intend for yourself in 2020, Yoga can help you achieve it.

Yoga is a practice which has proven physical and mental benefits, a quick google and you will be overwhelmed by fact based, and anecdotal evidence all in strong support of how Yoga makes positive changes on how you feel, and how you see yourself.

But more than an exercise, Yoga is also a place for you to feel treated, for you to feel supported as you reward yourself with some (probably) much needed and hard earned quiet time.

So this year, dont just take my word for it, have a quick google, have a quick read, and jump in to Yoga.

Come visit Humble Warrior Yoga, Lichfield’s cutest, most hand crafted and curated Yoga space.

Your first class is free, and we have class passes and memberships which will appeal to you.

But it will be a new found love of this truly transformative practice, in this special space that will keep you coming back.

So start one thing in 2020, and achieve all of your goals, better still, figure out what you realy want to change in 2020 as you give yourself some space and time to be with yourself on the mat.

New Year, New You?

As we enter 2020 its easy to take for granted the seismic shift that we are going through.

The ticking of the clock from 2019 to 2020 signals not only a new year, but also a new decade.

The end of one year, the start of a new, is always a time when we reflect on those things which that we want change, and its often a time when we feel pressured into making changes.

As we enter this new decade, be kind to yourself, stop comparing yourself to others, dont change things if they dont need to change, and stop beating yourself up for being less than enough.

At Humble Warrior Yoga, we are taking a different approach to helping you to become the best version of you in this coming year and decade. We will be using Yoga, Hypnosis, and Meditation to help build a state of self love, we will explore those things that we feel ready to release, we will ask our hearts to show us those things we truly want to change, and we will cement these intentions and carry them through softly into 2020.

So this year, work with intention and not resolution, start from a space of acceptance, love. Become the best verion of you by seeking change that serves you, not that which satisfies peer pressure.

Limited spaces for this set of 4 workshops are limited, so book your mat space now.

New(ish) teacher announcement

Laura has been practicing Yoga since 2002 and became a qualified Ashtanga teacher in 2016. Laura recently worked at the National Theatre as a permanent dresser and after several years there, she is now following her teaching path.

Laura believes in yoga’s ability to heal, nurture and protect the mind, body and soul by guiding our attention from the often busy and loud world around us, back to the silence and stillness we can create within ourselves.

Laura’s classes are inspiring, encouraging and fun.

Aside from getting famous actors dressed, and making shapes in-front of inanimate objects, Laura is a Reiki practitioner, and continues to develop her Yoga arsenal!

Stay tuned for further exciting Laura based news.

Knee deep in Yoga, Ankle deep in Ahimsa

Anyone who has practiced with me over the past 2 months knows, I have a bad knee.

I tell everyone; as often as I can. I steal every opportunity to remind you all that I am a poorly boy.

Some of you have even seen me unable to move away from my teaching mat as the knee joint I am so protective of, locks and I am immobilised.

The reason I have made such a showing out of telling you I have a sore knee, is not that I want your sympathy, but because I want you to honour your bodies in the same way I have been trying to honour mine.  I want you all to accept injury, to work with it, and not against it. This idea of self-compassion and tenderness towards yourself seems straightforward and sensible, but it’s hard in every-day life, when we have deadlines to meet, pressures to perform, and lives to live.

What is Ahimsa?

Ahimsa is a Yama. The Yamas are 5 of Yoga’s moral and ethical codes that we as yogis should try to embrace and live by. These Yamas are one of the 8 limbs of Yoga which were written and laid out in the Yoga Sutras, which is an ancient Yogic text.

Simplistically, Ahimsa is Kindness, to most of us, the idea of non-violence, seems fairly straight forward, you don’t go around picking fights, or being cruel to others, so you are good at Ahimsa!

But how often do you put yourself down, put yourself second, work longer than you should, harder than your body can cope with?

Now ask yourself again whether you are good at Ahimsa? Maybe, you can say yes, but I suspect secretly you understand that non-violence to other earthly creatures is the easy part of Ahimsa and that being kind to yourself constantly, consistently is the real challenge.

I am on a path to rehabilitation and recovery, and over these past few sunny days have even been able to walk my dogs further and longer, a sure sign I am on the mend. But my journey back to this point has been long and at times painful.

I’ve discovered that It’s always better to prevent injury to your body by living a life full of kindness and compassion to yourself as well as to others, but when (if) you do injure yourself, it’s important that you take the time to allow yourself to heal properly.

Next time you are on the mat, and you are struggling to reach the depths of a pose your ego strives for, come back to kindness, find a prop, ask for help, work with a modification and allow yoga to sink inside your body slowly. Practice and live with Ahimsa as you relinquish the ego.

Yoga for healthy knees.

As part of my recovery, I started to research Yoga for my knee injury, I knew Yoga could help me recover if I gave it the chance, and alongside other therapies, my knee injury (A Medial Collateral Ligament tear) is almost healed, I know there are things still beyond my ability at the moment, but I know in time, they will come back to my practice, and until then, I will continue to strengthen other parts of my body, I will build my breath, and explore my mind.

If you are suffering from knee pain, first of all seek professional help and advice, then maybe try some of these stretches at home or in the studio to see if you too can start to rehabilitate, and remember to take the option with the prop, to use those things we offer you first of all, and then settle into a deeper stretch as your body can accept the deepening.

In all of these poses, it is important that the knee leads the way, and that our focus sits with the knee throughout the entire journey, never allow the knee to roll into, or away from its natural line. The knee is designed to be stacked above the ankle and foot, if we start to move the knee away from this natural point, the strain, weight, and risk of injury increases. All of these poses can be modified to lighten the load and lengthen the journey to recuperation, Ask Iain next time you are in the studio how these poses could help you to strengthen your balance, feel more grounded in your standing poses, and how you can build strength to prevent injury before it happens with just a small amount of Ahimsa, and body awareness.

Autumn Timetable changes

autumn forest

We have just announced our Autumn 2019 timetable which you will find here.

There are a few changes  to the new timetable that you will notice. Kevin’s Pilates class has moved to a Monday at 1715 and we have also added more classes at 1730. This means you can come practice with us straight from the office and then spend your evenings doing what ever you need to uninterrupted. Alternatively stay and unwind further at our 2000 relaxing classes!

If you cant make the 1730 classes, we still have 1830 and 2000 classes for you to join!

You will notice we are adding a monthly  90 minute Ashtanga class to the timetable which will be led by Laura Clarke. Terrie Foster will be joining the team to run a Friday evening Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class and then a 60 minute Yin class. Terrie wil also be running a monthly 90 minute Jivamukti open class. Iain and the team will be sure to remind you about these classes, but keep an eye on our schedule and book them ASAP. We anticipate all of these new classes being very popular!

We are always open to suggestions, and all of the changes that we have made to the new schedule have come from your feedback. So dont be shy, if you like or love something, please tell us! Similarly if we could be doing something better let us know!
